Carmo Best Cup #23

grilled-peach   butterscotch

orange   pear

250g AU$18 / 1kg AU$50

This lot was ranked #23 in the 2018 Carmo Best Cup - an event we were ecstatic to attend last October.

Upon arrival in Brazil the top 31 producer lots had been chosen by our partners and hosts Carmo Coffees and Cafe Imports. It was then up to us along with fellow roasters and green buyers from Australia and the US to blindly cup and score the top 31 over the course of a few days and the top ten went straight into the Carmo Best Cup Auction.

Mariana de Carvalho Junqueira inherited this farm in 1954, and it has been a part of her family since 1896. While there were coffee plants on the property at the time that Mariana took ownership of the land, the "coffee culture" here didn't begin until the late 1970s, when special attention was paid to the crop and harvest for the first time. The first harvest was of 20,000 Yellow Catuai trees, which covered 8 hectares. Today, the farm is run by Antônio José Junqueira Villela: The coffee area spans 35 hectares and has several varieties planted.

Since the focus has shifted to coffee on the farm, picking, processing, and drying have improved tremendously. In the early 2000s, Rancho São Benedito was recognized by the Brazil Specialty Coffee Association for its very good production.
