The Coffee Scouts are grassroots community changers who along with a team of agronomists, find innovative and home grown solutions to aid farmers. Together with the farmers, the Coffee Scouts set up Farmer Field Schools which are small model coffee farms. At these farms, anyone in the community can come to practice farming techniques, ask questions, learn and obtain tools they need to produce quality coffee. This is the first year Long Miles have isolated the coffee from the Farmer Field Schools. The lot was then processed as a washed coffee at nearby Bukeye Washing Station.
Long Miles Coffee Project was started by Ben & Kristy Carlson when they moved to Burundi in 2011 and saw that both injustice and poor farming practices permeated the country’s newly privatized coffee industry. They launched Long Miles with a vision of developing grass roots coffee programs and establishing meaningful relationships between coffee producers in Burundi and roasters around the world.
Long Miles constructed their first ever washing station named after the village of Bukeye in 2013 and followed with two other stations in later years Heza & Ninga.
