Gonzalo Castillo is a coffee producer who owns a 3 hectare farm in the Southern Ecuadorian district of Zamora-Chinchipe. Gonzalo is part of local co-operative APECAP, which since 2008 has been helping to sponsor the “Bracamoros Coffee” festival which brings together producers in the region and features a cupping competition and auction of the best lots from the harvest.

This lot from Gonzalo was featured in the top 10 of the competition. These grassroots programs to promote small producers like Gonzalo to a wider network of buyers and higher prices is invaluable. Gonzalo and other producers in this area have been planting an innovative new varietal  since 2020 - a Hybrid F1 (first generation) recently released in 2019. They are the result of a hybridization of current Arabica varietals in a lab to produce trees much better suited to current and emerging diseases, pests and changing climate. This lot is one of the first harvests from this new varietal and has been processed in the classic washed method.
