The Ngutu factory is operated by the Raikamba Farmers Cooperative Society (F.C.S.), which owns seven factories in the area, on the Aberdare Mountains to the south of Mt. Kenya. Farmers in this area started to plant coffee in the early 1950s, and the co-op currently has 4,000 member farmers, about 1,200 of whom deliver to the Ngutu factory. The F.C.S. is managed by an elected body of seven committee members and overseen by a secretary manager; there are 28 permanent staff at the factory. The average farmer raises just 200 coffee trees on farms that are between 1/2–1 acre (or 0.2–0.4 hectare).

Farmer members deliver their cherry to the factory the day it's harvested, and it is sorted at the mill before being depulped. The factory uses fresh river water in its processing, and the coffee is dried under direct sun after fermenting and washing is complete. After drying, the parchment coffee is delivered to Central Kenya Coffee Mills (CKCM) for export preparation.
