The Runyinya mill is one of 13 mills that form the Akawa project. The Akawa project was created to help producers escape the cycle of poverty in a sustainable and equitable way. Producers, striving for fairer remunerations and better living conditions, demanded a path towards prosperity. The project's working directives are based around UTZ certification standards, focusing on good agricultural practices, environmental responsibility and social equity as the central tenets of success for project members. The Runyinya Station is managed by Patrick Dusabe and Bernard Kubwimana, whose input has led to big gains in quality in the past few years and thus higher premiums to the farmers who produce the coffee.

653 farmers around the area contribute coffee to the Runyinya washing station which is then processed and separated. This lot is a classic washed process but in recent years the mill has been experimenting with Honey's & Naturals.
